Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a perennial herb native to Europe. It possesses antispasmodic properties, is carminative, antiseptic, a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, and a stimulant. Its main active component is menthol, able to act directly upon the nerves which transmit the painful sensation, thus dampening the sensation. It also contains menthone, phellandrene and limonene.
For topical use, spearmint oil has a relaxing sensation and acts as an anti-irritant and pain reliever with the capacity to reduce pain and improve blood flow in the affected area.
