Shungite is a rare mineral found only in the Karelian area of Russia; the stone is named after the Russian town of Shunga where it was first discovered. Shungite is a carbonaceous mineral considered to be a “new age” mineral used in protection against electromagnetic waves and negative energies.

Shungite is an organic material with an electrical superconductivity superior to that of gold. It has a unique chemical composition and its components include aluminium, carbon, silicon, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and sulphur. The most remarkable thing about this stone is its internal structure of fullerenes, which are carbon molecules that have a very interesting geometric structure. They stand out in the scientific world for their chemical, physical and aesthetic characteristics, and on which new studies in nanotechnology and medicine are based.

Shungite has been used in medical treatments since the early 18th century. Peter the Great created the first spa in Karelia to take advantage of the purifying properties of shungite. He also used shungite to purify the drinking water of the Russian Army.

Shungite neutralises some of the electromagnetic fields produced by electrical appliances around us, helping to strengthen and stabilise the body’s energy. It is used for cleansing and protection, to discharge and cleanse the body of static electricity, as well as to soothe pain and regenerate the body. It also has an antibacterial use.

Characteristics:

  • Colour: Shiny black; may have some silver-grey reflection or lighter streaks.
  • Texture: Smooth.
  • Weight: 10-25 g
  • Size: 2-4 cm per side.
  • Origin: City of Shunga, in the Karelia region of Russia.

Caution: Shungite may stain slightly, as it may be covered with a natural layer of soot, which can be cleaned with plenty of water before use.
Shungite tombles stones are fragments of rock that are usually polished naturally (usually in watercourses). Their shapes are usually more or less rounded, without edges and with a smooth surface, due to the wear suffered by erosive processes.
