Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis) is the name of a South African plant, literally ‘red bush’ in Afrikaans. It is also known as Redbush tea although it is not really a tea plant.
Rooibos “Tea” has a very mild taste, slightly sweet and no caffeine, which makes it an excellent choice for children or nervous people suffering from hypertension.
It is a rich source of antioxidants such as vitamin C, and flavonoids, superoxid-dismutase and quercitin: a powerful cocktail to fight free radicals. It also has a rich and varied content of minerals: iron, fluor, potassium, zinc, sodium, copper, magnesium, manganese and calcium. Its high content in fluor and calcium helps to protect teeth and bones, while potassium and sodium regulate the balance of liquids in the body.
Rooibos does not contain any sugar (its sweet flavors comes from flavonon, a type of fructose without calories). It is not only diuretic, but also digestive and helps to regulate bowel movements. It is also an excellent muscle relaxant, and helps to alleviate nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Preparation
Add 1 large teaspoon to boiling or very hot water, let rest for a short or longer while, depending on how intense you want the tea to be. 2 to 5 minutes should be enough.
