Acidophilus are a set of bacteria which live in our body and mainly function in the digestive and immunological processes. They maintain an acidic environment in the body, which helps prevent the growth and harmful bacteria. They are mainly found in the intestines and in the vagina.
They form part of the food called Probiotics. Probiotic food (or simply probiotics) is food with live microorganisms which remain active in the intestine and carry out important physiological effects. Ingested in sufficient quantities, they have many beneficial effects, such as contributing to the host intestinal bacteria flora equilibrium and strengthening the immune system. They are able to enter the intestinal tract and recover in the feces, but they also attach to the intestinal mucosa. They are not pathogenic, except in cases where administered to immuno-comprised individuals.
How it works:
The intestinal flora have as their primary functions:
- The prevention of intestinal colonization by opportunistic microorganisms or pathogens (competing for nutrients and attachment space).
- Acting as a source of energy of the colonocytes (via the fermentation of carbohydrates and the consequent formation of short chain fatty acids).
- Stimulating and regulating the intestinal immune response.
The intestinal mucosa constitutes the greatest surface area of the human organism that is exposed to the exterior, and the gastrointestinal tract is the organ which is richest in immune cells. The loss of balance among the proportion of “beneficial” and “noxious” bacteria of the intestinal microbiota carry a predisposition to develop immune-inflammatory infections and diseases. Symbiosis among bacteria flora can be improved through nutritional intervention of the intestinal microorganism ecosystem using probiotics. Probiotics produce immunological benefits activating the fixed macrophages and increasing the production of secretory immunoglobulin A, as fixed as it is systematic, modulating the cytokine profile and inducing the decrease in the food antigen response.
Other non-immunological benefits which are able to contribute to probiotics are food digestion competing with the pathogens for nutrients, altering the pH level to create an unfavorable environment for the pathogens, and increasing the functioning of the intestinal barrier.
What is lactobacillus acidophilus?
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of bacteria which lives in its natural state in the human body and is primarily found in the intestines and vagina. Lactobacillus acidophilus helps maintain an acidic environment in the body, which helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.
Lactobacillus acidophilus has been used to treat or prevent vaginal yeast infections, oral yeast infections, diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics and urinary tract infections. Lactobacillus acidophilus can help the body maintain a normal consistency of bacteria in the stomach, intestines and vagina.
